If 2017 was the year for planting, 2018 is the year we begin harvesting the fruits of our labor. And so, I am excited to write to you about one program that will be the centerpiece of our work in the new year.

Excommunication should not be used as a fear tactic, or as punishment for speaking out against injustice. CTA/Nebraska members are faithful Catholics who have worked tirelessly for justice in their church. Instead of being excommunicated, they should be celebrated.

Nearly 22 years after area Catholics were excommunicated for their membership in a national church reform group, the bishop of Lincoln, Nebraska, has proposed a way to end their censure and return them to full communion with the church.

The national Catholic group Call To Action worked behind the scenes and helped finance the gathering as part of its own anti-racism initiative. Zachary Johnson, Call To Action's executive director, was encouraged that laypeople took the lead in organizing and promoting the event.

The 20/30 Project will mentor, empower and educate a diverse cohort of young adult Catholic leaders throughout 2018.

Throughout Advent, members of Call To Action's Anti-Racism Team will be writing weekly reflections based on that Sunday's liturgical readings.

In 2017, over 500 faithful Catholics gathered in Baltimore, Denver and Detroit for Call To Action's Regional Conferences!

Conference goers also learned from some of Detroit’s leading social justice organizers, including members of Keep Growing Detroit and clean water activist, Rev. Bill Wylie-Kellerman.

On October 20-21, nearly 300 people attended CTA’s East Coast Conference in Baltimore, titled “Justice and Mercy Under a Trump Administration.”

On September 8-9, nearly 100 people gathered in Golden, Colorado (outside Denver) for CTA’s Rocky Mountain Regional Conference.

Call To Action Vision Council member Debra Brittenum said “To be effective, this committee must include people with lived experience of racist oppression–including those who do not have theological degrees.

In a small Pennsylvania town, chalk on the path into the park reads, “When Black Lives Matter, then all lives will matter. Love guides justice. Silence is consent. Don’t be quiet.”

Bridging this generational divide by interpreting our Vatican II Catholicism for the movements of justice happening today is the work of Call To Action.
