Journalist Mary Jo McConahay on the American Bishops’ Strategy of ‘Playing God’

On November 15, 2023, journalist Mary Jo McConahay joined Call To Action for a conversation on the American bishops and the current state of the U.S. Catholic Church. McConahay is the author of the acclaimed book Playing God: American Catholic Bishops and The Far Right Campaign, which investigates the U.S. Catholic bishops and their associates and their involvement in right-wing political and social campaigns, from COVID-19 to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

About the speaker: Mary Jo McConahay is an award-winning reporter who covered the wars in Central America and economics in the Middle East. A graduate of the University of California in Berkeley, she covers Latin America as an independent journalist. Her previous books include Maya Road, Ricochet, and The Tango War: The Struggle between the Axis and the Allies for the Hearts, Minds and Resources of Latin America, 1933-1945. Playing God is her latest book.
