First Sunday of Advent

Today's readings

Where is your face pointed? What are you turned toward?

This is the question I hear throughout the readings today. The psalmist implores, “Lord, make us turn to you. Show us your face.” Isaiah begs God - return to us. Look at us. Catch us fostering justice. And Jesus commands us - keep your eyes on what I asked you to. I have left you in charge of something. Don’t sleep on it.

So, in this 2020 Advent, where is God calling you to turn your face?

As you get quiet in your prayer this Advent, follow God’s lead as she shows you what she wants you to look at. Does she turn your face toward the multiplying incidents of police brutality on social media? Does she ask you to look at her and really see her? Is there something else in your world that God wants you to pay special attention to this Advent?

And then get curious - what is God interested in here?

God, draw us to your face - to your cheek - the way a mother would.
Squeeze us close, cheek to cheek with you this Advent,
Turn our faces with yours to behold
our broken and beautiful world
through your eyes.
Guide us to face that which we must,
whether it is in our own homes or across the globe.
Prod us awake to notice what moves you.
Keep us awake to receive the precious gifts you have to offer.

Amen.
