Third Week of Advent: A Celebration of Joy
A reflection by the CTA Immigration Working Group.
“I rejoiced greatly when some of the brothers came and testified to how truly you walk in the truth. Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:3-4
The third week of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday, a Latin term meaning “rejoice.” Joy is central to Advent, as it reflects the excitement and gratitude for the coming of Jesus, who brings salvation to the world. This joy isn’t merely happiness—it’s a profound, resilient gladness rooted in God’s love and promises.
The joy of immigrants can be found in the resilience and hope that comes with building a new life, in establishing a new home, finding work, and building a life for themselves and their families, even amidst challenges. Immigrants bring diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives that enrich their new communities. Celebrating these contributions and sharing them with others can be a source of joy and pride. For many, immigration represents a chance to pursue education, careers, and a better future that might not have been possible in their home countries. Immigrants often demonstrate remarkable resilience, including navigating legal systems, discrimination, and separation from loved ones. Joy can be found in resisting these hardships and finding strength in community and solidarity.

Collective Prayer
By your grace, help us to banish fear from our hearts, that we may embrace each of your children as our own brother and sister, that we may welcome migrants and refugees with joy and generosity, while responding to their many needs.
Help us to realize that you call all people to your holy mountain to learn the ways of peace and justice.
May we share of our abundance as you spread a banquet before us, and may we give witness to your love for all people as we celebrate the many gifts they bring.

Una Celebración de la Alegría
“Me alegré mucho cuando algunos de los hermanos vinieron y dieron testimonio de cómo caminas verdaderamente en la verdad. Nada me da mayor alegría que escuchar que mis hijos caminan en la verdad.” 3 Juan 1:3-4
La tercera semana de Adviento es conocida como Domingo Gaudete, un término en latín que significa “regocíjense”. La alegría es central en el Adviento, ya que refleja la emoción y la gratitud por la venida de Jesús, quien trae salvación al mundo. Esta alegría no es simplemente felicidad — es un gozo profundo y resistente, arraigado en el amor y las promesas de Dios.
La alegría de los inmigrantes puede encontrarse en la resiliencia y la esperanza que viene con construir una nueva vida, en establecer un nuevo hogar, encontrar trabajo y construir una vida para ellos y sus familias, incluso en medio de desafíos. Los inmigrantes traen diversas culturas, tradiciones y perspectivas que enriquecen a sus nuevas comunidades. Celebrar estas contribuciones y compartirlas con otros puede ser una fuente de alegría y orgullo. Para muchos, la inmigración representa una oportunidad para buscar educación, carreras y un mejor futuro que quizás no era posible en sus países de origen. Los inmigrantes a menudo demuestran una resiliencia notable, incluyendo navegar sistemas legales, discriminación y separación de seres queridos. La alegría puede encontrarse en resistir estas dificultades y encontrar fortaleza en la comunidad y la solidaridad.

Oración Colectiva
Por tu gracia, ayúdanos a desterrar el miedo de nuestros corazones, para que podamos abrazar a cada uno de tus hijos como a nuestro propio hermano y hermana, para que podamos acoger a migrantes y refugiados con alegría y generosidad, mientras respondemos a sus muchas necesidades.
Ayúdanos a darnos cuenta de que llamas a todas las personas a tu monte santo para aprender los caminos de la paz y la justicia.
Que compartamos de nuestra abundancia mientras tú organizas un banquete ante nosotros, y que demos testimonio de tu amor por todas las personas mientras celebramos los muchos dones que traen.
