Homelessness talk begins bi-monthly series

In January 2021, Call To Action’s chapter leaders will begin a series of virtual presentations on justice issues in the church and world. These recurring talks (the third Wednesday of every other month) are open to the public.

The first presentation in the series will take place on January 20, 2021 at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT/5 pm PT. (Zoom link; no registration required, simply click the link to join.) CTA Executive Director Zach Johnson and long-time leader Caryl Callsen will present on homelessness. As optional preparation before the call, Zach and Caryl offer some homework:

  1. This five-part audio series,  According To Need, describes the way homeless people in Alameda County, California experience newly implemented federal policies for homelessness response.

  2. This half hour video shows how homelessness was dealt with in Minneapolis in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, before the advent of nonprofits.

While some of the information in the podcast series is specific to Alameda County, the description of the process and bureaucracy applies to most homeless people and the advocates who work with them. The same is true for the video, which accurately depicts how most places handled homelessness in the pre-nonprofit era.

During the call we'll discuss how things have changed, why they changed as they did, and how people like us can help change things again for the better going forward.
