Annunciation House is a volunteer organization that offers hospitality to migrants, immigrants, and refugees in the border region of El Paso, Texas. Since its founding in 1978, it has provided shelter, clothing, food, and other basic necessities for hundreds of thousands of migrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America. Its current ministry, Casa de Refugio, is the primary support for those seeking asylum in the El Paso area. It also participates in advocacy and education around immigration issues and seeks to be a voice for justice and compassion, especially on behalf of the most marginalized of our society. Rooted in Catholic social justice teaching, the volunteers of Annunciation House live simply and in community, in the same houses as the guests they serve. At this event, a member of the Call To Action Immigration Working Group will share the story of her week-long visit to El Paso and her experience volunteering at Casa de Refugio. This will be followed by an extensive interview with the Director of Annunciation House, Ruben Garcia. Mr. Garcia will discuss the work of the House, its needs, the current "state of play" at the border, and his perspective on the what the future is likely to bring. A Q&A will follow.
