Call to Action: 57
57. We call upon federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments to provide education to public servants on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.

Professional Development and Training
for Public Servants
Call To Action's 2023 Lenten Calendar is a collaboration between the Indigenous Solidarity Collective and Anti-Racism Team (ART). This calendar provides more than 40 days of prayer and study to lead members into action and solidarity with Indigenous communities. For holy days and Sundays during Lent, we'll publish a reflection from an ART or Indigenous Solidarity Collective member on why we're committed to undoing racism and Indigenous oppression in our own communities and biases and what it means to do this work as Catholics. Following each meditation or reflection, we will feature a call to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
In the face of such violence and cruelty as that of the residential schools of indigenous children, how could we ever begin to forgive?
The Gospel reading today instructs us to do just that. Forgiving does not mean that we forget; instead, it opens us to a richer understanding and allows us to help others learn. Today, let's commit to educating others on the history of Indigenous schools and widening our intercultural competency. We can also ask our governments to support these endeavors.
And let us remember Luke 6:40. "No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher." Before we can instruct others, we must become the teachers we want others to be.
