Introducing the alternative liturgies calendar

In 2020, Call To Action’s National Campaign focused on four strategies for changemaking: education, lobbying, direct action, and creating alternatives.  Alternatives are central to the Catholic reform movement and promote different ways of being church together. Over the years, many CTA members have found homes in chapters that they could not find in their parishes. These innovative and liberative liturgies draw on decades of wisdom from alternatives like women-church communities, house churches, and intentional communities that live, work, and worship together.

Since last year, the Alternatives Working Group has been a space for members across the country to discuss and implement ideas for alternative community spaces. The Alternatives Working Group is now pleased to announce the launch of our latest project:  The Alternative Liturgies Calendar! You can find it under the “Communities” tab at the top of our website’s homepage.

This calendar will share information about gatherings inspired by Vatican II to provide meaningful spiritual experiences, worship, and community rooted in Catholic tradition — outside the parish setting. The Alternative Liturgies Calendar is for everyone to use. It not only provides information about what services are taking place, but will also serve as a growing database of alternative and inclusive resources as more spiritual communities are formed.

In the near future, the Alternatives Working Group will be releasing short videos describing how alternative liturgies are rooted in the early days of the church and how you can form one.

If you or your community already gather in an inclusive, alternative liturgy and would like to have it placed on the calendar, please email Revalon Wesson at revalon@cta-usa.org.

The Alternatives Working Group meets every fourth Thursday of the month at 7 pm Central Time.  All are welcome to join us in our endeavor to promote different ways to be church together.

With hope and solidarity,

Revalon & The Alternatives Working Group
