Pope's Performance Review

Call To Action is supporting the group "Send the Bishops a Message" in their campaign to withhold funds during the Peter's Pence Collection on Sunday, June 27th. Catholics are encouraged to print the following flyer and drop it in the collection basket to let the pope know that we do not approve of his handling of the sexual abuse crisis. It reads: "This year for the Peter's Pence collection, I'm sending advice rather than money...."

Catholic Group Says Pope's Apology Not Enough

Jim FitzGerald, Call To Action’s Executive Director, said, “The Pope’s statement reveals either a woeful ignorance or unabashed denial of the worldwide nature of the abuse problem in the Catholic Church. An apology will not erase the crimes committed nor prevent future ones. Our church—and particularly our children—deserve more than mere apology; we deserve immediate action.”

As World Examines Vatican on Sexual Abuse, Vatican Quietly Launches Investigations Against Nuns

"Where are the church's priorities?" asked Jim FitzGerald, Executive Director of Call To Action, the nation's largest progressive Catholic justice organization. "Instead of focusing on how they can prevent additional sexual abuse of vulnerable children, the Vatican is spending time and money on an investigation into women's religious communities and ministries that have often been at the forefront of caring for children in schools, hospitals, food kitchens and parish communities."

Statement on European Catholic Church Sexual Abuse

Recent reports in Germany alleged that Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, harbored a pedophile priest in the Archdiocese of Munich, Germany. From Ireland to Switzerland, survivors are coming forward with allegations against church officials and dioceses are being forced to make public statements about their knowledge of the abuse that has been kept secret for decades.

Call To Action joins SNAP, the Survivor's Network of those Abused by Priests, in calling on European governments to initiate investigations into the allegations in order to uncover the abuse that has remained hushed for decades and may have been known by the highest level of officials in the Roman Catholic Church.

WJWD: What Jesus Wouldn’t Do
Call To Action stands in solidarity with those who over the last month have experienced a series of oppressive actions by the Catholic hierarchy over sexual identity. In Washington DC, Catholic Charities discontinued its foster care services so that it could avoid placing children with loving same gender couples. Additionally, Catholic Charities, rather than give healthcare benefits to same gender couples, cut off all future healthcare benefits to spouses, gay and straight alike. Equally disturbing is the decision by some church leaders to bar a child from a Catholic school in Boulder, CO, solely because the child’s parents are two women.

CTA Members Protest Unjust Church Firings in Florida
Charging that Church workers have been fired unfairly as well as defamation, interference and harsh restrictions, over 35 demonstrated at the office of Bishop Frank Dewane, who refuses to meet with the people.

"At least 26 people have been unfairly fired from their jobs or quit because of working conditions in the Venice Diocese," declared Ellen McNally of Southwest Florida Call To Action. "We cry out to God in our pervasive frustration, our intense anger and our abiding hope for our Church."

CTA Issues Statement in Support of New Ways Ministry
Call To Action stands in solidarity with New Ways Ministry this week after Cardinal George of Chicago issued a statement dismissing their pastoral ministry programs and casting doubt on their Catholic identity.

"New Ways Ministry is a standard bearer for what it means to be Catholic," says Jim FitzGerald, Executive Director of Call To Action. "Gay and lesbian Catholics often find themselves verbally and sometimes physically assaulted by those who believe in the homophobic and hurtful teachings of some church leaders. New Ways Ministry, like the Good Samaritan, has witnessed the suffering of gay and lesbian Catholics, their parents, families and friends, and has tended to their spiritual wounds. They are a model for the entire Christian community.
