Get involved: CTA and anti-racism

CTA members are hard at work on anti-racist projects throughout the country, and they need your help! Through Re/Generation, our Working Groups, and the Anti-Racism Team, members have developed several projects that center anti-racism. Today I’m asking you to get involved with this critical work. All of these projects are in their early stages, and we need you to help bring them to fruition. Wherever you are in the country, there are ways for you to support Black, Indigenous, and anti-racist Catholic organizing.

Los Angeles Support

CTA staff has begun working with organizers from an indigenous tribe in Los Angeles. The Fernadeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians is seeking acknowledgement and reparations from the Catholic mission built on their land by the unpaid labor of their ancestors. A local organizer is developing a project description with specific demands.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Are you in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles? Our first step is to seek allies within the diocese, so we need volunteers who have prior knowledge of diocesan politics or are willing to research and help us engage fruitfully with the Church hierarchy.

  • We will later apply public pressure through social media, communications, letter writing, and potentially direct action.

To volunteer, please email cta@cta-usa.org with "LA SUPPORT" in the subject line.

USCCB Power Mapping

2020 Re/Generator Nadia Busekrus is working with the Lobbying Working Group to develop a power map of the USCCB on anti-racism. Power mapping is a tool that identifies the best people to target to promote social change. This means developing a deeper understanding of how institutions work and how things get done. Building a power map will require identifying and researching bishops, diocesan officials, committees, programs, institutions, staffers, and other points of influence in the USCCB structure. Understanding who has the power to shift the USCCB’s actions and statements on race, we will develop a resource that illustrates how to make strategic and effective anti-racist change.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • On Tuesday, October 13th at 5 pm PT/7 pm CT/8 pm ET, join us for a USCCB Anti-Racist Power-Mapping Research Session. On this 1.5 hour call, volunteers will conduct power-mapping research online with guidance and support from CTA. No prior experience necessary! All you need is a computer. Advance registration is required.

To volunteer, register for the October 13th call via the link or email cta@cta-usa.org with “POWER MAP SUPPORT" in the subject line.

Kenosha Support

Our local leader in the Kenosha effort is Carthage University student Natalie Lall. Natalie’s goal is to bring anti-racism 101 training to the parishes of Kenosha, WI and beyond. She has received positive responses within her parish and diocese. Members of the Education and Lobbying Working Groups are collaborating to support Natalie’s effort.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Are you local to Kenosha? Volunteer to coordinate efforts in your own parish.

  • Do you have experience offering anti-racist trainings, preferably online? Support our Anti-Racism Team in implementing trainings.

To volunteer, email cta@cta-usa.org with "KENOSHA SUPPORT" in the subject line.
