Springtime CTA regional conferences
A spring season of eight regional CTA conferences is underway, bringing national speakers to appreciative local audiences. Nearly 100 heard Rosemary Ruether in Wisconsin. Bishops Ken Untener and Tom Gumbleton keyed on social justice for 250 in their native Michigan. Over 300 at CTA New England heard Gumbleton, Miriam Therese Winter and Mary Hunt. Winter drew 125 at CTA Philadelphia. Still on tap are events in Chicago, Baltimore, and New Jersey.
At CTA Nebraska/Iowa, Eucharist and diversity were central themes. Theologian Bernard Cooke said, "If you ask people as they exit Mass, 'What is the eucharist?' you'll hear every conceivable heresy. But there is an underlying faith that transcends the differences." Unity, Cooke said, comes from our common life, from the animating spirit, and we don't have to wait for complete agreement before we start sharing our unity.
