Corpus Christi: Time to pray and talk about crisis over priesthood, Eucharist
Using a new prayer service and resources from FutureChurch/CTA, over 30 parishes and communities around the U.S. will make the Feast of Corpus Christi, June 2, an occasion for frank discussion about the future of priesthood and Eucharist. With 27 percent of U.S. parishes without a resident priest, and with the sex abuse scandal rocking priestly ministry, the new prayer service is spreading even faster than the St. Mary of Magdala observance did when first introduced.
The prayer service provides time for a speaker and group reflection on obstacles to celebrating the Eucharist. Materials include an interview with Fr. Donald Cozzens, author of "The Changing Face of the Priesthood," priest shortage statistics from the U.S. bishops, and a parish study guide. FutureChurch also suggests Corpus Christi as a day of prayer and discussion of ways to heal the Body of Christ broken by the national scandal. They recommend wearing green lapel ribbons as a sign of hope.
