The National
Catholic Reporter deserves praise for sponsoring the Jesus 2000
art competition. New representations of Jesus came from 1,004
artists in 19 countries. BBC art expert, Sr. Wendy Beckett, chose
this winner from 10 finalists: "Jesus of the People"
by Janet McKenzie of Island Pond, Vt. The winning image in the
NCR Dec. 24 became front-page news across the U.S. and in many
other nations. What Beckett calls "a haunting image of a
peasant Jesus - dark, thick-lipped," dares to identify the
Messiah with people of color - the vast majority of the human
family. It has stirred enormous discussion, pro and con. Amid
the secular hype of Y2K, that alone is good news.
