Dear friends,

Summer is upon us. Are you ready for a sabbatical?

In summer months the Spirit often beckons us, not just to leisure and play, but to rest -- as in sabbath rest. These pages contain Christian reflections by Joan Chittister, and Jewish reflections by Arthur Waskow, on the Judaeo-Christian gift of sabbath, Shabbat.

Paradoxically, entering into the true spirit of sabbath will enhance our work for justice. It means "resting in the God of life," writes Chittister, "and bringing more to life ourselves as a result." After all the doing, it means "a pause for being," says Waskow, "which can bring you back to a center and remind you to examine the purpose of the doing."
