A letter from the editor
The yearlong celebration of CTA’s
30th anniversary began when Joan Chittister stepped to the microphone
Friday evening, Nov. 3, and affirmed, “Anniversaries say
that we meant what we said when we said we were going to do something,
and we’re here to stay.” In fact, more than simply
stay, we will muster the courage to begin again! Joan’s
whole message is reprinted in these pages.
The stakes are high. “All institutions
go through cycles of natural death as the world around them changes.”
Our Church is no different. Renewal “waits for those who
will rise up and make it happen.”
Joan evoked the resolutions of CTA
1976 and updated them for today. “CTA 1976 called for justice
in the church, the elimination of racism, and a pledge to promote
world peace.” Here, 30 years deep, are the roots of our
new JustChurch Project, our AntiRacism Team, and our urgent action
to oppose the Iraq War and its defiant escalation. But now all
must be done with “interfaith understanding and respect
that world peace demands. The world we knew was basically white,
largely Christian, and those who weren’t we ignored.”
Now “diversity is the sign of the presence of the God who
speaks in many tongues. Meister Eckhart writes, ‘The seed
of God is in us all.’”
