In a moving and inspirational talk at the 1999 CTA Conference, liturgical scholar and theologian Miriam Therese Winter exhorted her listeners to supplement the traditional sacramental Eucharist with another model, based on the many meals the disciples shared with Jesus, and the joyful "breaking of the bread" that went on in the early Jerusalem community of Acts 2. She said this "small e eucharist" is one that we should celebrate, parallel to and in addition to the official Eucharist, while we wait for the latter to become more inclusive.
I transcribed this talk from the audiotape, and with Miriam Therese's collaboration, edited it slightly for publication in these pages. We think the text will be useful to many in CTA's extended family, because it gives us both the scriptural basis and the pastoral impetus to do something positive "while we are waiting for the day when we will be welcomed inclusively into the full designated sacramental ritual of Eucharist in the Church, especially women and married men in roles of leadership."Bill Thompson
