Arts in Ministry: Meet A. Brian Zampier, SM

With the departure of the members of CTA's Performing Arts Ministry to other endeavors, the Arts in Ministry Program is up and running. Our aim is to be a referral service to bring together artists of all sorts with the audiences who desire their talents. We would like to introduce you to one of those artists who have registered with us.

A. Brian Zampier, SM, founder and sole proprieter of abz art, is a Marianist brother who works with pen and ink to express messages of social justice and spirituality, and sometimes reflections of the more mundane. He is an illustrator and cartoonist who uses simple line drawings to convey messages both meaningful and entertaining. His sense of humor and his spirituality are evident in his drawings. He sees his arts ministry "as a way to bring creativity, hope, community, humor and a holistic spirit to the world." He believes "those are gifts the world can use."

Brother Brian has a unique fold-out resumé with numbered paragraphs that track his artistic education and training from kindergarten class (where he made a clay snowman that was noticeably a cut above the snowmen of his classmates) to a Bachelor's degree from SUNY at Buffalo in Communication and a Masters from Syracuse University in Illustration. A native of New York, Brian joined the Marianist order in 1986.

More than 100 of his drawings have been published in the National Catholic Reporter in the last ten years. He has a book that he sells to non-profit organizations for $25 which contains 90 drawings that can be used as clip art. (Send mail order requests to abz line art collection, A. Brian Zampier, SM, 4435 E. Patterson Road, Dayton, OH 45430-1095. $25 plus $3 shipping. Ohio residents, add $1.50 or include your tax exempt number. Make checks payable to: Gallery St. John.)
