Wallis: Time for a new spiritual politics
Jim Wallis, an Evangelical minister and editor of Sojourners, told CTA the problem with the welfare reform law passed in 1996 is that "you don't tear down the house until you get the people out first." From now on, churches need to have a voice in such decisions, not just be there to clean up the mess. So Wallis convened the Call to Renewal, a movement of Evangelicals, Black churches, Catholics, mainline Protestants and Pentecostals. He feels the time has never been more ripe for ecumenical action: "The Cold War among Christians over poor people is finished." Young people are doing volunteer work in record numbers, finding that doing justice is good for the soul. Wallis also sees the culture is now intensely interested in politics and spirituality, as folks agree that changing a community is a spiritual task. His CTA audiences were enthusiastic to get involved.
