National Missile Defense

President Bush's proposed national missile defense (NMD) is being opposed on both strategic and moral grounds. For "Why deterrence is better than a missile shield," see the essay by CTAer Charlie Davis, a retired analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency, in the NCR Aug. 10. His e-mail is cndppm@aol.com. Bishop Tom Gumbleton presented the moral and Gospel reasons for opposing NMD in his talk at the Los Angeles CTA conference. He will also speak in Philadelphia.

The Bread Not Stones campaign of Pax Christi USA is part of a growing coalition lobbying against NMD. Visit the new website: www.paxchristiusa.org

People's Synod on the Internet

The International We Are Church Movement and 300 other church reform groups and networks have opened a "Synod of the People of God" on the Internet. Since the International Bishops' Synod in Rome throughout October is discussing the role of bishops, we the people of God are invited to discuss the same topic in cyberspace. We are invited to visit www.shadow-synod.net, respond to the questions posed (in any of nine languages!), and perhaps talk to our own bishop. The discussion will all feed into the people's shadow synod Oct. 4-7 in Rome. Then all the input will be delivered to the official Bishops' Synod. Since the Cardinals' Consistory in May chose to discuss reform of the Curia and less Vatican interference in the role of diocesan bishops, the fall Synod is an chance to push this reform agenda.
