Voices: A singing group that travels for peace and justice

CTA's Arts in Ministry referral program brings performing groups together with appreciative audiences. Here's a profile of a singing group that will perform at CTA conference 2000.

"Tearing Down Walls," the title of their newest album, describes in a nutshell the mission of the musical group Voices: to tear down walls and build bridges of respect and understanding between races, nations, communities, churches, and people everywhere. It is the group's sixth album since 1988.

Based in Chicago, Voices has performed in benefit concerts, coffee houses, churches, and schools, as well as leading music and prayer for many different peace and justice movements, including the School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch). They also combine music and education in workshops on social justice issues for community groups and schools.

They will appear at the CTA National Conference in November on Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday night will feature a full concert of original compositions, international sounds, gospel and contemporary folk music. Friday night's performance will accompany the presentation of the CTA Leadership Award to SOA Watch.

Voices received the Community Peackemaker Award from the Chicago Peace Museum in 1998.
