Dear Editor,
I am a Catholic who will be voting based on the long-standing tradition of my faith’s concern for social justice. While Bishop ____________ may urge voters to vote based only on the issue of abortion [or gay marriage or another issue], I choose to vote pro-life on issues such as ending sexist and racist discrimination, stopping war, promoting compassionate immigration reform and supporting universal healthcare [add your concerns]. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” an election-year document that states “The consistent ethic of life provides a moral framework for principled Catholic engagement in political life and, rightly understood, neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues” (FCfFC, 17). I only hope the Bishops will follow their own guidelines and speak out for the promotion of life and justice across the spectrum of moral social issues, and not solely on abortion [or other single-issue].
Sincerely,
Your Name Here
