RELIGIOUS VOICES

Blocking war remains high on Vatican to-do list
V

Stepping back from the precipice
Reasons to oppose a U.S.-led attack against Iraq include the moral -- Pope John Paul II's voice is perhaps the most prominent among those who see war as a defeat unto itself. But some also claim practical reasons, with a wide spectrum of political, military, labor and religious leaders questioning whether war is the only means to achieve an end that is nearly universally shared: the demilitarization of Iraq. Below is a sampling of antiwar thought: Source: National Catholic Reporter, Feb 28, 2003

Vatican - Not anti-US, just anti-war
As the possibility of war in Iraq grows, the Church is also feeling the heat. The repeated pleas for peace issued by the Pope, members of the Roman Curia and assorted bishops' conferences have been criticized by some observers as evidence of either unjustified interference, mere pacifism or not-so-subtle anti-Americanism. Bishop Pat O'Donoghue of Lancaster supports cry of the marches - no to war!
My Christian conscience is troubled by the fact that hundreds of thousands of Iraqis will die as a result of a war. The World Health Organisation estimates that there could be 100,000 casualties and another 400,000 thousands affected by internal displacement and disease. Millions may have to flee as refugees. I believe nothing can justify such human carnage and displacement. I believe that the £2 billion set aside by the Chancellor for the war should go to help the world's poor, saddled, as they are, with debt, starvation, underdevelopment and the HIV pandemic. Affirmation of Faith for Peace
We Muslims, Taoists, Buddhists, Catholics and Protestants want to underline that we make this affirmation of faith for peace based, not on any political stance toward any particular country, but rather on the values of our faith traditions which compel us to speak out for peace and the preservation of life.
