PRAYER

by Diane Lopez Hughes

SOA Watch Prisoner of Conscience

On January 28, 2008, Diane was sentenced to serve 45 days in prison and pay a $500 fine. She began serving her sentence immediately. She was released from Muscogee County Jail on March 11, 2008.

The following is her prayer and her poem.

Redeemer God, you who shelter fawn and flower, hear the prayers of your people. Help our leaders to seek the common good over profit and power; move jailers to treat all who they serve with respect and equity; bless those who visit prisoners; and rain down your healing compassion to the women: carry them in your love throughout each day and protect them in the dark of night.
Amen.

Women here
are golden flowers
on stems of darkest brown

All different
yet the same:

All hair, skin, way --
of thinking,
heartstories unique;

yet dignity,
with love inspired,
womensense straight up --

Women here
are sorrow songs
amid a field of hope.

March 19, 2008 marked the 5th anniversary of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, which has left 4,075 U.S. soldiers dead and injured over 29,314. This war has left Iraq in shambles while at home the economy is on the brink of a recession.

Holy Father John Paul II
Do Not Be Overcome by Evil, but Overcome Evil With Good

1. At the beginning of the New Year, I once again address the leaders of nations and all men and women of good will, who recognize the need to build peace in the world. For the theme of this 2005 World Day of Peace I have chosen Saint Paul's words in the Letter to the Romans: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (12:21). Evil is never defeated by evil; once that road is taken, rather than defeating evil, one will instead be defeated by evil.

Peace is a good to be promoted with good: it is a good for individuals, for families, for nations and for all humanity; yet it is one which needs to be maintained and fostered by decisions and actions inspired by good. We can appreciate the profound truth of another saying of Saint Paul: "Repay no one evil for evil" (Romans 12:17). The one way out of the vicious circle of requiting evil for evil is to accept the Apostle's words: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21).
