Catch the spirit ... with lay people, religious, and clergy Our theme for this conference is “Sex, Science and the Sacred: Embracing Divine Mystery.” For centuries there has been a gulf dividing religion and science. People who valued their religious faith and also respected scientific knowledge have had to find their own way of integrating them or live a somewhat schizophrenic existence keeping each in its separate place. In the 20th century a conversation between the two began, giving more depth and richness to the traditions of our faith and also pointing to new directions for the development of human life and culture on this planet. As we face the challenging issues of our times it is critical that we bring the values of our Christian faith into the conversation, but it is also essential that we seek accurate information. The traditional moral teaching of the Church on sexuality needs to be reexamined in the light of contemporary knowledge about human sexuality. The tradition of the just war theory in the Church must be critiqued in light of the realities of contemporary warfare. An understanding of humans as integrally related to all the rest of creation in one community may have implications for shaping political, economic and cultural institutions. The story emerging from archaeology and biology that all humans have evolved from a group of adventurous migrants who left Africa some 60,000 to 100,000 years ago gives even more resonance to the Christian teaching that we are all sisters and brothers. Thomas Aquinas taught that there could be no conflict between the truth of faith and the truth arrived at by reason. Seeking truth is a moral imperative. The 2004 Call To Action Conference features speakers who have struggled with many of the questions, issues and challenges that are part of today’s reality. In doing so they have deepened their Christian faith and have discovered the sacredness of our universe. They will share some of their journey with us this weekend. We hope you too will come and share your own wisdom. The CTA Conference gathers thousands of individuals, faith communities and organizations working to renew our church from all parts of the United States. CTA has 40 regional chapters and links to similar renewal movements in many other countries. Opportunities for caucuses and networking abound. The conference is packed with variety. Choose your own level of participation. If cost is a problem, apply for limited income registration. If not, consider making an extra donation to support those who need such assistance. If you can’t come, be part of the movement. If you haven’t joined CTA, join now. Send a donation and stay in touch. Dan Daley Co-Directors, Call to Action |
