Catch the spirit ...

with lay people, religious, and clergy
committed to Vatican II and the U.S. Bishops' 1976 Call To Action in Detroit,
committed to rebuilding the Church for the next generation.

Our theme for this conference is "Called to be Peacemakers: Prophetic Leadership for World and Church." The peace we seek is no mere absence of war or conflict. Where conflict seems absent, great suffering and oppression often continue. The peace we seek is a state where all life is nurtured and encouraged to flourish, a state that Jesus promises in the coming of the Kin-dom. We are called to be makers of this peace. Sometimes this kind of peacemaking actually results in conflict.

In Scripture the prophets speak from the margins. They do not occupy the positions of power in their societies. They speak for the least powerful. They often speak an unpopular word. To influence decisions they must get us to consider an alternative way of thinking and acting. Often this means giving up our comfortable ways. Prophets are frequently punished for their unpopular messages.

Jesus has called us to be a prophetic community, to "rejoice and be glad" when we are persecuted as the prophets were. To what are we being called today?

We have heard many prophetic voices in our world and church this past year. Sometimes prophetic voices conflict. How do we discern where truth lies? One thing is clear. Truth is not found in silence. The prophet must speak. The community must listen prayerfully, and discuss the messages it has heard. We have tried to bring many prophetic voices to this conference, so that we may all listen and discern our call to be peacemakers. As individuals and as a community, we must decide to act in some new way.

The CTA conference is a national assembly of thousands of individuals, faith communities and organizations working to renew our church. CTA has 40 regional chapters and links to similar renewal movements in many other countries. Opportunities for caucuses and networking abound. The conference is packed with variety. Choose your own level of participation. If cost is a problem, apply for limited income registration. If not, consider making an extra donation to support those who need such assistance.

If you can't come, be part of the movement. If you haven't joined CTA, join now. Send a donation and stay in touch.
