Chittister fires up LCWR: a preview of CTA
As keynote speaker for 800 “top gun nuns” at the Leadership Conference of Women Religious Aug. 18-21 in Atlanta, Benedictine Sr. Joan Chittister minced no words about the graying of her audience. CTA Georgia regional representative Lynn A. Manfredi-Petitt was there staffing the CTA booth, and reported on Joan's message:
“She reminded those of us who led the ‘first 40-year charge toward the mountain of church change’ that we are again camped at the base of the mountain, deciding what to do about those who are in control of the top. We have to keep the dialogue open, allow younger ones to try things, and develop a renewed sense of vision — even if we have been there, done that, and know it won't work.
“Although the mountain top can be a threatening place, we must not focus on creating a place of comfort for our old age—or worse, lead our groups "back to Egypt" because it is familiar and safe. We must be open to change and growth led by others, and even join in the work, which is still sorely needed.
“Joan said we must continue to be Jesus in the world — the voices for the voiceless— even if it feels foolhardy as we age. We have to light the way with new vigor and not just leave the work to the secular groups who are currently dominating peace and justice efforts in the world.
“Joan said that Mother Teresa was 68 when she began her world-renowned ministries! Then she listed many other elders who did the same. Her words were quoted back to us again and again at the CTA booth.”
